As an I.T. professional. I never had that much of an education in chemistry. I know it’s important for medicine, rubber and plastic based products among other uses as universal as it gets. Though playing this, I think I’ve had a better understanding of it than I did before.
The rules are basic, your building compounds of chemicals such as salt or water to gain victory points while also using these to “attack” another players compounds and mixtures to reduce or take away their points.
The only failing grace I’ve so far seen is not many players have been attacking or need to attack just yet. If there was an incentive to fight while have the other player like a temporary boost to steal one of the chemicals it broke down too or something more sneaky, then there would be an incentive to fight more often if needed.
Still, this is an educational game and I love the art to it.

My 8-9 yo kids learned the names of all the characters from pokemon , minecraft amognus and other games. I figured if they can do that, why not actually learn something that will be beneficial for them at school. I searched online and found valence, and so far it has been a wonderful and fun game, lots of strategy playing, the base/water and shield reactions are a good trick. The learning also is great: now they know how to navigate the periodic table, atomic number and atomic mass, element symbols. I see opportunities to add more elements maybe phosphorus, nitrogen, iron, magnesium etc. The elements we find in our body. Perhaps even a virtual version for online valence gaming.

My husband and I and our 11 year old had a lot of fun playing this game. Beautifully drawn cards. Not too complicated to play (compared to other games we have). Watching the YouTube play-through video by the game author helped. We were all learning chemistry by the end!

I have purchased this to test the game out for school. Using my kids as guinea pigs, as you do with new board games, I have found that they have loved it and want to play it over and over. It reinforces the concept of positive and negative numbers. Basic summation of positive and negative numbers. Balancing of charges. The concept of positive and negative charges needed for elements to form molecules… Really good for junior science. It could be extended for Stage 6 Chemistry, or could be used as an assessment task for Stage 6 Chemistry students to develop new cards and rules for chemical reactions that are not included within the game… So many opportunities to extend gifted and talented students, as well as challenge average students. An excellent game.

I and my son (10 yr old) love this game. We have played it multiple times since it arrived. He has developed a keen interest in the periodic table and different molecules. He now wants to pursue a career in Chemistry as he finds chemistry is so much fun and interesting.
